Last month, I had the pleasure of photographing Asma & Yousuf’s three days South Asian wedding. The festivities began with the Nikkah or exchange of vows ceremony. It was held at a Bait ul Qayem, a mosque in Delran, NJ. The event was gender segregated with men and women in different halls. Asma remained veiled with a red dupata covering her body while the Nikkah was recited. After the completion of the vow ceremony, which was conducted on the gents side by mullahs, Yousuf and other family members entered the women’s hall where several traditions followed. One tradition included the bride and groom seeing each other for the first time by looking in a mirror at each other’s reflection.
